Mr. Potts medical condition is related to his excessive consumption of alcohol. However, regardless the explicit advice from the doctors to quit drinking, Mr. Potts continues to take in large amounts of alcohol that endanger his health further. These habits have negatively affected his children more so Cindy who has developed behavioral problems due to her father’s behaviors. Mr. Potts lacks any relationship with his wife and children and shows little concern for their wellbeing. He leaves his wife to do all the packing and organizing during their yearly trips. He also puts his wife through humiliating situations when he misbehaves in these situations. Mr. Potts’ condition has caused a lot of stress to both his wife and children who reveal this in different ways. Mr. Potts doesn’t have a sound relationship with his daughters who react differently to this lack of connection with their father. Cindy has turned into an angry child whereas Sarah sympathizes with her father for his condition and behavior. Cindy is emotionally disturbed and doesn’t know how to express these suppressed emotions rather than mutilating herself. His wife is also emotionally disturbed although she attempts to respond to the questions carefully to avoid saying inappropriate things that can result in constraints with angry husbands. Mrs. Potts seems to have been negatively affected by Mr. Potts alcohol abuse. Mr. Potts doesn’t help her with anything in their lives including packing or organizing for the two annual trips. Mr. Potts also put his wife through humiliating experiences due to his misconduct when drunk. Although Mrs. Potts acts in a guided manner during our interaction as the parole officer, she is emotionally disturbed and undergoing a lot of stress. She is also afraid of revealing a lot of IMPACTS OF ALCOHOL ABUSE 3 personal information about her husband that can result to emotional difficulties between them. The threat of domestic violence has not been ruled out hence Mrs. Potts fear of expressing inner details and information about her husband. On the other hand, Sarah seems to be managing her life pretty well. She feels sorry for her father and sympathizes with him on many occasions. She also tries to put the family together and eliminate the problems caused by Mr. Potts drinking problem. Although she acts to be okay, seeing her father health deteriorate due to something preventable negatively affects her. Mr. Potts has been admitted in the hospital on numerous occasions before his surgery and heart attacks. These health challenges and the lack of emotional connection and the unavailability to Mr. Potts affect her emotional development although she hides away her suffering and stands up to be there for everyone else while she is suffering on the inside. She cares for her father a lot hence she is going through a very tough time and the worst case is that she camouflages and hides her suffering to appear okay to everyone else. Cindy is a very angry child. She not only suffers due to her father’s alcohol abuse but his heart condition as well. She feels the increased need to reach out and talk to someone who will hear her out and help her. However, none of her parents seems to be hearing her cries that have resulted to her self-mutilating behaviors as a cry for help as well as attention. She wants the attention of someone who will listen and step up to her assistance. Mr. Potts alcohol abuse has resulted in lack of emotional and functional relationship with his daughter he doesn’t involve himself with her life that hurts her feelings and has affected her mental development. Cindy behavior problems can be attributed to the stressful experiences with her father’s emotional detachment and his increased drinking and frightening nature.
