Three-elevenths of the cars at the sale were Fords. If 136 of the cars were not Fords, how many of them were Fords?

Three-elevenths (3/11) of the cars at the sale were Fords so 8/11 of the cars were not Fords.

We find it like this : 1 - 3/11 = 11/11 - 3/11 = 8/11 

Let's call x the total number of cars : we have 8/11 * x = 136 so x = 136 * 11 /8 = 187 

The total number of cars is 187 and the number of cars that were Fords are 3/11 x 187 = 51
