1. Ecological Systems Theory
This theory can also be referred to as the human ecology theory or development in context
theory. It was formulated by a psychologist named Urie Bronfenbrenner. It analyses five
environmental systems that influence an individual's development (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2010).
With this theory, we can understand why our behavior in the company of our family differs from
our practice while at work or school. The five systems are:
•
Microsystems-This refers to the peers and associations that directly affect a person’s
development, which is the immediate environment. This includes a person’s peers, home,
work or school environment.
•
Mesosystem-This refers to the relationship between the microsystems in a person’s life.
This means that the experiences we have with our family might in some way relate to the
experiences we have in school.
•
Exosystem-This involves links that might exist between numbers of settings. This means
that it is possible to have people and places that a person might not directly interact with
but in some way or anoth...
