been in existence for years. The Sunjata is a recital of the adventures of the Mande dynasty
founding father Sunjata as he liberates people from the sorcerer and creates the empire. Conrad
substantially translates the original work of Conde and includes introduction and notes that are
informative to the reader. The text is informative in nature, particularly to readers unfamiliar
with the Manding conventions, while maintaining the original performance values that the
narrator was emphasizing. The book is useful in the present research as an approximation of
original Mali performances.
