Unit 7: Latin America Overview
During our seventh unit we will be discovering the musical traditions of Latin America. We will first be learning about Mestizo music in Peru and Mexico. A big theme of this unit centers on all of the new instruments and traditions that have developed in the Americas by blending European, African, and Indigenous traits together. Next, traditional indigenous music will be explored focusing on the Highland Aymara of Peru and the Lowland Suya of Brazil. Finally, we will learn about African-based traditions in Brazil, Ecuador and Colombia.
You will need to complete the following activities and assignments during this one-week unit:
-Read Excursions in World Music Chapter 9: Latin America.
-Complete and submit the Latin America Study Guide
-Play the Latin America Lecture Presentation, and watch all of the associated Video Clips found embedded in the presentation.
