cos(x-pi/4)=cosxcos(pi/4)+sinxsin(pi/4)=cosx(sqrt2 /2)+sinx (sqrt2 /2) = [(sqrt2) /2](cosx+sinx)

you need to use the trig identity cos(a-b)=cosacosb+sinasinb
