Rhetorical Analysis of an Anti-smoking Advertisement

Introduction
The chosen advertisement is an image showing a bullet and a cigarette. The bullet is labeled
“quick” while the cigarette is labeled “slow”. The advertisement makes use of three rhetorical
appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos through the image as well as implied meanings. This way, the
image communicates some sense of danger and promotes awareness regarding how deadly
smoking is.
Creation of the image was meant to arouse a response from its smoking as well as nonsmoking audience smokes. It is designed to discourage non-smokers from smoking, however, it
is going to have minimal effect on them because they do not smoke, hence, care less about death
caused by smoking. Again, it is designed to encourage smokers to quit smoking and will have a
major impact on this group because it shows them that they are exposed to the risk of death if
they are to continue smoking. On the other hand, they may ignore it since they know that
smoking has their health, and continue smoking due to addiction or their pathetic state. They
may as well consider such an advertisement harmful and unoriginal because antismoking
