VISION AND MISSION COMPARISON

2

Introduction
Strong vision and mission statements are important to the success of an organization. I
will do a comparison between Wal-Mart, an organization I know and Sweet green an
organization which I have located on the internet. Wal-Mart mission statement is ‘’saving
people money so they can live better’ ’whereas the vision statement ‘’to be the best retailer in
the hearts and minds of consumers and employees’’. The Sweet green mission statement is
‘to inspire healthier communities by connecting people to real food’ (Williams, 2015). The
functions of a company's mission statement are to outline the business of the company, its
goals and the method to achieve those goals. A vision statement defines the future
anticipations of the company. The elements of the vision and mission statements are normally
coined to give a statement of the company's purposes, objectives, and values.
Criteria for Making Robust Statements
For a mission statement to be robust, it has to meet the following criteria. The
statement has to be informative, simple, memorable, achievable, and employee buys in
(Gordon, 2017). An informative statement is the one that gives the overall goal of a company
and gives an insight of what guides each decision and operations in the organization. It also
summarises what the company does without giving specific details. The Wal-Marts mission
statement meets this criterion because it informs the customers what it does; saving people’s
money’ meaning that they sell their products at reduced prices. The statement does not
elaborate on how it saves people’s money. But it is clear that the prices are low compared to
other places thus one saves money.
The other aspect of a robust mission is that it should be simple. A simple statement
should not be too detailed. The language used should be simple, clear and concise. It should
be one or two sentences in length. Wal-Mart mission statement is precise and anyone can

understand it since the language used is simple and concise. The words used can be
understood by anybody regardless of the status. The statement should also be memorable.
The Employees and the consumers should be able to remember what stated in the vision and
mission statements after they have seen it. Mem...
