Currently, nations have been working hand in hand to come up with a uniform design codes
for their engineering works. These standards codes are very useful in terms of reaching out a
constant design consideration for both earth retaining structures among others. Among examples
of efforts which have been attained already include congress meeting held on March in the year
2012 by the international Code Council. More efforts have been put in the field of civil engineering
as a way of ensuring uniformity during construction of structures. The first code to be published
was termed as the International Green Construction Code in the year 2012. The code was put in
place as a way of setting a green building requirement. Additionally, the US government wanted
to maintain high standards of structural construction.
Moreover, the codes were to issue directions on how to ensure an effective site
development and land use. All mandatory requirements for storm water management, changing
and shower facilities, jurisdictional requirements, paved walkways and bicycle paths were having
been highlighted by the articles. Additionally, the code issued guidelines on how to ensure material
resource conservation and efficiency. LEED rating system offers guidelines based on how to
conserve materials within the construction site. Requirements of civil engineers have been
highlighted too: They are responsible for the following: constructing residential housing with
compliance to ICC700. Deciding and validating on whether construction should be made in flood
hazard areas, whether to include construction near surface water in the code, determining the
appropriate minimum percentage of construction waste which needs to be diverted from land fill
during the process of construction. Moreover, they are responsible for determining whether there
is need to apply acoustic requirements during construction period or not. Lastly, civil engineers
are mandated to determine whether there is need to have enhanced energy efficiency during
construction.
