The Case of Bernard
The case involves a married couples by the name Rebecca and Bernard who were blessed
with four children. Rebecca finds out after ten years of marriage that his husband Bernard has
been secretly visiting gay bars and also in a five-year gay relationship. She was shocked by this
double life her husband was leading and later confronted him. This forces Bernard to seek
therapeutic help from Sara who observes traditional religious values and thereby strongly
opposes the gay relationships majorly on the moral grounds. Sara is a professional therapist, she
thought of the need for informed consent by informing her client that she is not well acquainted
or experienced on matters concerning gay relationships. However, she is committed to help
Bernard through researching the subject and also carry out consultations with her colleagues who
might have more knowledge and experience in the field of gay relationship, and this makes her
believe that she is overqualified to work with Bernard. Evidently, after the fifth therapeutic
session, the psychological condition of Bernard started deteriorating, and it was not necessary to
cancel the counseling process or even end the therapeutic session before finishing the final stage.
Furthermore, Sara believed that it was prudent for her to take the approach of role model to
educate Bernard of the acceptable social values. For instance, she took Bernard to one of the
most popular restaurants where straight couples socialize and also led Bernard to her church to
enable him to learn the importance of marriage and its role. These approaches indeed proved to
be effective as it helped Bernard to improve his married life.
