Description

This is in regards to the Debate on Payment for Ecosystem Services paragraph you wrote me. I have to write a paper on the topic. I attached the instructions, the paragraph and references I sent you before. Case option: analyze a single case that we have not studied in the syllabus readings, using frameworks we have studied. Make an argument about how the frameworks (or some element of them) helps us understand the case. Include at least two sources beyond the syllabus, which provide the empirical details of your case.

The paper will ideally be 7 – 10 pages, when doubled spaced in Times 12 point. However, the rigor of thought in your paper is more important than its length; please do not include peripheral or extraneous material just to fill pages. Please do number your pages. Use APA citation. Also a short power point presentation on the topic.

PAYMENT FOR ECOSYSTEM SERVICES

Payment for Ecosystem Services
There is currently an ongoing debate between those favoring the requirement of paying
for ecosystem services and those claiming that this payment is not to be done considering that it
puts a higher risk on nature. The debate is the result of the past events in which different
communities have been rewarded for having participated in the preservation of resources and
ecosystem services, whereas other communities are not paid for performing similar activities.
Proponents of the payment for ecosystem services claim that these payments act as
incentives promoting a better resource management and enhancing environmental protection.
Opponents, in contrast, claim that putting a price on the environment is undervaluing it, and that
there is a risk of further damage resulting from such undervaluation.
The present paper analyzes both points of view using the available data from different
scenarios in which part of the community was rewarded for their ecosystem services while
another part was not. The objective of the paper is that of analyzing the real advantages or
disadvantages of these programmes by critically evaluating the claims of both proponents and
opponents to the payment for ecosystem services. From this point of view, the impact of these
programmes on both the community and the environment itself is analyzed.
Why was payment for ecosystem services considered in the first place?
Payment for ecosystem services was proposed as a policy to promote environmental
protection in the developing world. The objective of these policies was that of rewarding the
communities that, through their projects, tried to preserve the environment and better handle
their resources. Governmental organizations expected that the application of such policy would
somehow overcome the imbalance currently existing between the production and consumption of
resources by these communities (Scarlett & Boyd, 2015).

Claims of the proponents and opponents of the payment for ecosystem services
The two main claims used by the proponents of policies oriented to the payment of
ecosystem services are:

The reward will serve as an incentive for the development of projects oriented to the
protection of the environment and a better management of the available resources.
From this point of view, the community undergoing such project would not only
benefit from the somehow intangible effect of having a better environment, but also
from the tangible financial reward received from such environmental protection
actions.

Since this incentive will motivate the community to accomplish the proposed project,
the environment will be protected, and the negative impact that would have occurred
if this project had not been carried out would be minimized.

In contrast, the two main claims of the opponents of the payment for ecosystem services
are:

Putting a price on the ecosystem will generally resul...
