how do I factor an algebraic expression using gcf?

exampls:

5c+5d and 4x+8y

May 9th, 2015

The greatest common factor of 5c + 5d is FIVE because 5 is the biggest number common to both terms, so

5c + 5d = 5(c+d)   We pull out the 5 because when we distribute we get the original equation.

For 4x + 8y we get

4(x+2y)  because 4 is the biggest number common to BOTH terms.
