Description

  • PROMPT: The context that had created and supported the Jeffersonian world view (that of the yeoman farmer as the bedrock of American democracy and the American economy) disappeared by the mid-nineteenth century, prompted by a shift toward an economy based on commerce, manufacturing, and larger scale agricultural endeavors. What is your best explanation for why this change took place? What impact did this change have upon the ethics and civics of what it meant to be an American? Be sure to consider change over time and geographical differences in your analysis.

Hint: Think broadly here as you scattershoot/concept map your essay before writing. What were the economic causes of this change (think about markets, productivity, trade policies, etc.)? What role did technological change play? Consider social causes (conflicts between groups, classes, races, genders), political causes (new voters, political parties, institutional leadership, etc.), government (state, federal, various branches), and expansion of the nation. Think also about intellectual changes (new ways of thinking, religion, and conceptions what it means to be an American and questions of ethics and civics) and changes in environment. You need not answer all of these questions in your essay, they are here to guide your thinking on the prompt. Hint 2: Make sure that you integrate your discussion of Change over Time and Ethics/Civics throughout your analysis, not just in one paragraph. This means that Change over Time and Ethics/Civics WILL NOT be key points in your rule of three thesis statement.

Between the year 1790 and the 1820s Americans had the Jeffersonian democracy which
was one of the two dominating justices. Jefferson founded the democracy in an attempt to oppose
the Federalist Party.1 The Jeffersonian was based on the foundation of no corruption, opposition
against aristocracy, building on virtues like those of the yeoman farmer. The democracy was
against elitism of merchants, factory workers, and manufacturers, and kept watch of those in
support of the British system of governing that was dreaded. Due to industrialization, the
democracy faded out even though some of its aspects are still felt to date. In this paper, we look
at how the change affected the economy of the country, how politics and the government were
affected and finally the social effects the change had.
Industrialization caused social changes by dividing people according to gender, race and
the socio-economic classes. There was an enclosure movement where the wealthy aristocrats
pushed the government so that they could own their lands. The move pushed away from the
small-scale farmers that shared the little land that was available. The ones that owned the lands
created a social circle of the wealthy which left out the low-income farmers. The revolution led
to the increase in factories which the Jefferson democracy was against.2 The factories provided
work for the farmers who had little experience on how to handle machinery, but th...
