All through in the history, clothing along with food and shelter has been known as the
major basic wants of the mankind. Clothing choice is ruled by the community and culture one
lives in. Traditional dressing in China significantly differs across diverse parts of the nations and
is prejudiced by local customs, geographic climate, and settings of both urban and rural. In
China, clothing evolves over time and most time dramatically transform following dynastic
changes of the imperial decree of a new ruler. The paper, therefore, explores the Cheongsam
clothing which evolved from ancient times and sees how the cultural dress communicates to the
world.
Physical Appearance
Cheongsam clothing also is known as qipao or Cheung sam is a one-piece garment of
women having an asymmetrical frontage opening and ornamented with different piping,
adornment and closures of ‘frog.’ It is a lengthy skin-tight dress having undersized sleeves, a slit
on one side with mandarin collar and binding transversely the right side of the upper chest
(Benson & Suhailah Salim, 2017). It is a national dress of Hong Kong representing an
amalgamation of Chinese and Western Clothing styles. Cheongsam majors on the sleeve and a
collar shape. The sleeve of the dress may be a wide sleeve, narrow, long, short sleeve or
sleeveless. The design of the collar was majorly around the collar, front straight, square collar
and pipa breasted. If the collar was round, the dress on breasted cheongsam could line
coordinately smooth. If the collar was straight, the dress was to be plump so as round face
women could fit suitably making their figure to appear slender. The textile material of
cheongsam was major of fabric, silk, satin penuche and georgette velvet. The common color
used in cheongsam was a red and flowery color which had a long history of culture by
embodying the female charm of implicit elegant. Its pattern is of Pisces, riches and honor flowers

and mostly depicted the flower pattern. The button is made of loops folding thin sewing cloth
woven starting at the neck moving down the right side and the buttons differ from the whole
material.
Historical Timeline for the Culture and Dress
Cheongsam evolved during Qing dynasty between 17th- 20th century. All Han Chinese
received an order from the Manchus in 1636 that they were to wear the dress or else they were to
face harsh punishmen...
