Nawaf akhathiri Nalkathiri2016@fau.edu In the final essay “The Black lives matter movement: I will explore the popular activist movement that has in the recent times gained recognition for its anti-racism and anti-racial messages. As such, the following paper is a proposal on an essay about the black lives matter movement that aims at defining the campaign and explaining its significance in attempting to change the current state of police brutality and extrajudicial killings in the US, more so against people of color. The movement addresses the issue of systemic racism and violence against black America. The Black Lives Matter (BLM) campaign gained prominence after an incident involving an African American teenager and a police officer went viral when the officer took the life of Trayvon Martin but was later on acquitted. The paper will also outline an annotated bibliography on the topic too. In the paper, some of the research questions that will guide and influence the direction of the paper are such as, why was the movement formed? The second question is, is the movement effective in addressing the issue of violence and mistreatment for the people of color? The third question is, what is the role of social media in the social movement? Finally, the last question is, how effective is the movement in regards to addressing the societal issue? The above-mentioned four questions aim to narrow down the research and ensure that majority of the focus is placed on the social movement. The questions will, guide my research and ensure that relevant primary and secondary sources are selected to aid in the research. The primary data will be published journals that were written immediately after the movement began. Some of the primary sources include Barbara Ransby`s article that analyzes the class politics of the movement and Nikita Carney`s article that assesses the role of social media in passing the message across. The secondary sources will comprise of articles that provide additional information on the topic and analyze how people responded to the social movement. Both the primary and secondary sources will be vital in conducting the research as they will ensure that the study remains grounded in black lives matter as a modern social movement. Annotated Bibliography Carney, Nikita. "All lives matter, but so does race: Black lives matter and the evolving role of social media." Humanity & Society 40.2 (2016): 180-199. Carney`s article assesses the significance of social media in enabling the social movement ‘black lives matter’ to gain prominence. As described by Carney, the movement started as a mere hash tag on social media after several members of the African American community felt aggrieved after a teenager got murdered by the police after altercations. Carney cites Trayvon Martin`s case and reiterates its importance in riling people of color and how it influenced a modern-day systematic revolution. However, Carney continuously reiterates the significance of social media in assisting the pioneers of the movement to get the necessary publicity. Social media handles, more so Twitter proved instrumental in making viral and consequently making most Americans curious about the meaning of the trend and its importance. Carney`s article on the role of social media in the black lives matter movement is crucial to the study as it provides insight on how the social movement is different to the initial movements which relied more on violence or protests. Carney highlights the rise of social media in the 21st century and how it can make topics gain publicity and mass attention in a limited span of time. As a primary article in the research, the journal article provides intricate details on how the movement was planned and executed. Moreover, the article is crucial in answering the third research question which is based on the role of social media in the black lives movement. Horowitz, Juliana Menasce, and Gretchen Livingston. "How Americans View the Black Lives Matter Movement." Pew Research Center, July 8 (2016). The book by Juliana Horowitz and Livingston Gretchen highlights the possible factors that led to the popular ‘Black lives matter movement’. The authors are critical of the prevailing indirect racial segregation in America and mentions that the movement started as a result of the mistreatment of the African American community. However, Horowitz and Gretchen reiterate that some sections of the white population perceive the movement as inappropriate since they believe that the incidences were just random occurrences. Contrastingly, some section of the American population believes that the movement is legitimate and is the appropriate cause of actions, more so in such a time where African American lives were being disregarded by members of the police force. The book by Horowitz and Gretchen is an important part of the study as it provides a well-rounded perspective on how the movement started and how American citizens perceive it. As a secondary source, the book is not only relevant to the research but also appropriate in understanding how and why the black lives matter movement started. The piece will assist me in addressing the first research question on why the social movement was formed. Petersen-Smith, Khury. "Black lives matter: A new movement takes shape." International Socialist Review 96 (2015). Petersen`s article is a perfect introduction to the movement describing in detail how it started as well as some of the greatest influences that determined the direction of the movement. As can be seen, the article provides an in-depth analysis of how the African Americans have been disregarded in the society for a while not only in schools and social places but also by the various law enforcement units. Further, the author discusses how the movement was formed and its pioneers and also addresses how the movement is likely to influence future political and social moves. The article is necessary in the research as it helps provide a first-hand perspective on how the movement was formed. Impressively, the author offers additional insights on the movement by explaining how and why it started as well as describing the future trends likely to be influenced by the movement. As a primary source, Petersen`s work will prove crucial in providing additional information on the topic. Ransby, Barbara. "The Class Politics of Black Lives Matter." Dissent 62.4 (2015): 31-34. Barbara Ransby`s journal article focuses on breaking down the movement to tinier sections that allow for further analysis. Ransby`s article aims to prove that not all black people are affected by violence and insecurity arguing that the poor who live in less safe neighborhoods are more likely to be affected than their counterparts living in suburbs and high-end neighborhoods. The author suggests ways in which the Black Lives Matter movement can be used in addressing the sensitive issues affecting the less fortunate blacks living in risky neighborhoods. Further, Ransby attempts to assess the effectiveness of the movement and the future trends that might prove influential in ensuring it achieves its purpose. As a primary article, Ransby`s work helps analyze the movement from a different perspective that would be difficult without the insights provided. What is more, Ransby`s article helps answer the second research question which is focused on how the movement assists in addressing the issue of violence and mistreatment of the people of color. It gives the study a different angle of analyzing the black lives matter movement and its ability to reach out to its targets. Rickford, Russell. "Black lives matter: Toward a modern practice of mass struggle." New Labor Forum. Vol. 25. No. 1. Sage CA: Los Angeles, CA: SAGE Publications, 2016. Russel Rickford took a different approach in his article as he assessed the Black Lives Matter movement from a critical perspective. The article critically analyzed the design of the social movement and its appropriateness in the modern world. Rickford asserts that the mannerism and direction of the movement have enabled it to gain widespread recognition. He further goes ahead to conclude that had the movement taken a more violent approach then it would have been counterproductive. However, its calm, modernized and technology affiliated nature enables the stakeholders to reach out to a broader crowd subsequently influencing more people and communication professionally as opposed to emotionally. The article by Rickford is as a critical secondary source as it analyzes the structure, design and appropriateness of the movement. The piece assists in answering the final research question on the effectiveness of the Black Lives Matter movement in addressing the sensitive issues that affect the people of color in the US.

BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT
Black Lives Matter movement began as an online campaign with a purpose of
campaigning against racism, violence and the oppression experienced by the blacks in America.
The movement originated from the black community but over the years it has gained popularity
and attracted activists globally who have helped in campaigning against the same. The
movement began in the United States because of police brutality, violence and racial
discrimination against the African-Americans because of their color. The movement gained
maximum recognition after the killing a teenager by the name Trayvon Martin. The strong ties
among the black community helped to instigate the movement while on the other side, the weak
ties, specifically Facebook, and Twitter platforms have helped to catalyze the spread of
information, raising the awareness at a great speed globally. The black lives movement has
therefore been spearheaded by both strong and weak ties which have had a significant role in its
development and establishment as a social movement.
The black lives matter movement was formed because the black Americans felt they were
being oppressed and that some of their rights as citizens were not given much weight by the
government. The cases of police brutality against the blacks were on the rise and many lives

were being lost in the process. Violence towards the blacks was and still is on the rise, a factor
that makes the black community and the Americans at large to have a different perspective on
the matter. The movement was therefore started to bring all the atrocities and loss of black lives
to an end.
Black lives movement started off as a hash tag of #Blacklivematter on social media
platforms. The hash tag was widely used on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and
Instagram back in 2012 after the murder of Trayvon Martin. The hash tag# spre...
