In the movie Mudbound, various aspects that affect us are tackled. The movie unravels
the themes of racism, friendship, war, family, and poverty. A picture on how blacks are faced
with prejudice as they try to fit in the society is painted on the movie. The movie is about two
families, a black family and a white family who live in a social structure where blacks are
socially constructed as inferior. Black characters are faced with hardships as they battle with
harsh reality of being prejudiced by the whites.
The two families live different lives, and the black characters are depicted as servants to
the white family. Scenes set at the two families are also lit differently. The blacks house is quite
dim thus building on the theme of poverty while the home for the other family has got enough
light. Jackson's family is very close from the scenes that unfold in the movie. Hap's family is also
tightly knit, and he works hard in raising strong children by instilling virtues in them through his
hard work and faith.
Dee Ree also explores the theme of friendship. Ronsel and Jamie's friendship buds and
blossoms despite their diverse racial backgrounds. War is also built on the events that take place
