Machiavelli vs. Erasmus
Machiavelli argues that it is better to be feared rather than being loved if a leader cannot
achieve both concurrently. His assertion is based on two fundamental premises. First, subjects
will continue to show their love for a ruler as long as that a motivation exists for that love.
Secondly, the subjects will support a ruler whom they fear out of the fear of perceived
consequences of failure to support the ruler. Erasmus, in sharp contrast, argues that a good ruler
