Edward and Diana walked to the dock at 3 miles per hour, jumped into the boat, and motored to Dillion at 9 miles per hour. if the total distance was 15 miles and the trip took 4 hours in all, how far did they go by boat

May 10th, 2015

let distance walked be x

and distance travelled by boat = y

distance =velocity x time

t1=x/3

t2=y/9

therefore,

x/3+y/9 =4 hrs                   (given)

and also,

x+y=15

solving above two equations we get

x=21/2

and

y=7/2

so distance travelled by boat is 7/2 miles...............................................................................................................
