Introduction

Sexual harassment is any unwelcome, sexual advance or request for sexual favors or
any verbal or physical conduct of sexual nature. The different form of sexual harassment
includes verbal, non-verbal, physical or visual. All these forms send a suggestive message,
that which is sexual in nature. Sexual harassment occurs when the submission to such
conduct is implied to a person give given conditions for either employment or in academics.
Also, rejection of the conduct affects the person in his/her workplace or at schools. Lastly, the
action affects the performance of an individual work or in school. The paper reports on what
entail sexual harassment and the importance of having organization develop sexual
harassment policy (Maypole & Skaine, 2013).
Forms of sexual harassment
To start, verbal sexual harassment involves utterance of words that are unwelcome by
the person whom the utterances are being made and they suggest seeking of sexual favors.
This has been an issue in the workplace since not everyone is aware of what constitutes the
sexual harassment offense. In verbal sexual harassment, they include offensive jokes of
sexual nature, repeated cases of the sexual request, request for dates, unwelcome flirting, the
threat of harm if the sexual favors are not granted and lastly unwelcome compliments of
sexual nature. To determine that a certain verbal message suggest sexual harassment it should
be repetitive and excessive. But for the threat of sexual favors to retain the job, a single
utterance or incident is enough to justify that it is sexual harassment (Russell, 2014).
Not all jokes are so suggestive but when they are directed to a person, either male or
female using sexy words or they offend the person whom the message was said to, then it

qualifies to be sexual harassment. Also, there are instances that a person asks for sexual
favors repeatedly either in office or outside the workplace. Therefore, any message of sexual
nature that is unwelcome to the respondent is termed as sexual harassment.
The other form is the non-verbal communication sexual harassment. This does not
involve any physical contacts or oral communication. This includes use of suggestive
gestures, winking and leering (Baxter & Hermle, 2012). For instance, winking at somebody
as a way of calling them is a suggestive gesture that it offends the respondent. Some of this
