Women Empowerment
Abstract
Hypothesis: The Remote Country of Women portrays a society of empowered women.
Based on this hypothesis the paper will relate the Chinese and American women are
empowered. When referring to the empowerment of women in Chinese the examples will be
abstracted from the book. The Remote Country of Women does not generally give a true
reflection of women empowerment in China, because it is fictional. However, the paper would
use other real examples to show how the American and Chinese women are empowered to show
how this novel portrayed a society with empowered women. The concept of women
empowerment has been a central topic in many countries, whether developed or developing.
Women empowerment is not just a concept that is supported by women only, but there are men
who have also joined women in their struggle for gender equity and equality. Hence, the paper
would solely try to compare and contrast women empowerment in Chinese and American
societies.
Women empowerment in the United States and China came through a cultural revolution.
The United States and China are generally patriarchal societies, and women have always been

playing second fiddle to men (Bai, et al, p.1).However, through legislation and recognition of
women in the society, slowly the barbaric culture that undermined women started to change for
the better. First note that the American women right from the colonial period were viewed as
subordinate to the menfolk, and that is the reason they were confined to roles like raising kids
and taking care of their homes when their husbands are away. Similarly, in China women have
been viewed as second class citizens’ right from its past eras. However, as things stand today,
there is a cultural revolution where the society is beginning to recognize that women are equally
important, and thus should be empowered like men. Ideally, it was Cultural Revolution, which to
some extent has been happening naturally though with women movements. Similarly, in The
Remote Country of Women, it portrays women empowerment only to occur through a revolution.
As the book starts, it gives a scene of a cultural revolution, where children are on a hilltop
watching cars bend around the hill (Bai, et al, p.1). In the vehicles or trucks, there are soldiers
moving around with guns and the children are cheering from above. Some children wanted to
pee on the vehicles, because they were oblivious of what was happening. Indeed, the soldiers are
carrying real guns, and that signified Cultural Revolution. Later, the women thanked the soldiers
for their efforts to bring Cultural Revolution that empowered women (Wu, and Qingyun, P.177).
In a nutshell, women empowerment has been a struggle that never came on a silver platter and
that is why in this book guns are used and the soldiers were armed to signify a cultural revolution
in favor of women.
In America women empowerment is believed to be the role of the government. In the
same breath, in China the Chinese government is directly involved in women empowerment. The
former US president Barack Obama was fully committed to empowering women, not only in his
country but across the world (Jarrett, n.p). In most of his addresses he argued that empowering

women is equal to empowering the society. In his government also, women were significantly
represented and former first lady Mitchell Obama was a champion of women empowerment.
Similarly, in China the government is more interested in women empowerment and that is well
supported by the CSW 60 that was held in the country. The Chinese government acceptance to
host commission on women status was proof enough that the government is fully involved in
supporting women empowerment. In relation to the book, there is evidence that some authority,
though of a woman is spearheading the rights of women. Gu Shuxian is in charge of the central
committee as depicted in the book and she is giving women the right way orders like they should
not accept to marry men if there are no marriage certificates. Gu is solely in support of women
and that proves that there is some authority, which could be considered as government
supporting women empowerment through instructing them on what they should do when dealing
with men (Doepke, et al, p.45). Gu speaks with authority and she wants women not to easily give
in to males sexual advances, so as to prove to them that they are no longer subservient to men. In
essence, the point here is that for women empowerment to succeed those in authority must
support it. The government or any leader in authority must clearly show their participation in
championing for the position of women in the society. As seen in the book, Gu appears to be a
no nonsense woman who is not ready to allow women to fall into trap of men, because that to
some extent can give men an opportunity to undermine their struggle to empower women and
give them a voice. Thus, for women empowerment to succeed the people in ...
