Kerzner and Belack 2010, stated projects can be divided in two groups; traditional and nontraditional projects. Traditional project usually last 6-18 months, when nontraditional project may last, several years. Also in traditional project team members have clear vision, what needs to done and what is the project purpose. Nontraditional project aim may change several times in project lifecycle.
Before start a new project, you should have a clear vision, what is needed to be done and what is the main purpose of the project. It is essential that everybody who is involved in project, knows what are the purposes and aims. All projects have three key factors; time, cost and quality. In projects it is very hard to have all factors at same time. If project is lacking of money, it is very hard to achieve excellent results and vice-versa.
Kerzner 2010 stated the importance of a good methodology cannot be understated. Not only will it improve your performance during project execution, but it will also allow for better customer relations and customer confidence. Good methodologies can also lead to sole-source or single-source procurement contracts
You can have in your organization good project management methodologies but these won’t probably work if it cannot be updated all the time like people who is involved in projects. This is one key issue what should take account in project management methodologies. First you should identify project and after that you can adjust your company methodologies to meet these requirements. If you try to use same project management methodologies for all projects, you probably fail in the project more often than success to achieve the targets. Every project should be handled as an individual project. More likely project employees have been working before same kind or similar projects. You should listen carefully employees’ ideas from the previous projects and then adjust the methodologies to meet the current project objectives.
Methodologies are set of forms, guidelines, templates and checklist that can be applied to a specific project or situation (Kerzner 2010, 156). Companies which understand importance of methodologies in project may receive many benefits out of this. You may fasten your project duration with methodologies which usually means more money for the company. But most critical output maybe that your customer seen you as a professional and trust you and this is what you cannot measure. In time you can also develop your company methodologies to meet other processes i.e. risk management.
