Translation and Principles
1.0 Introduction
The project I chose to undertake was translating a short story from French into English.
The purpose of this project was to gain a better understanding of the various challenges and
difficulties that come with translating from one language to another. The short story I chose was
a classic piece of French literature known as Notre Cœurriche (Our Heartrich), written by
renowned French author Guy de Maupassant. The text is about a frigid, emotionless woman who
is implied to be homosexual. The source text was written in a classic French style, with a broad
range of vocabulary and complex sentence structures. The target reader for the text was a wide
audience of native French speakers and those who were not fluent in the language.
2.0 Theory Review
During the project, I explored several translation theories to understand better the
translation process and how to overcome the various challenges I encountered.
2.1 Skopos theory
One of the most important theories I looked at was the Skopos theory, which states that
the goal of any translation should be determined by the purpose for which it is intended. This
theory is important for short story translation since it emphasizes the importance of
understanding the context and intended purpose of the target text to ensure that the translation is
accurate and suitable for the intended readership (Prommak, 2022).
