Document 21= Jane Addams on Settlement Houses
Addams had a personal notion that it was necessary to settle the young immigrants of the
country. This is was especially the young females due to the then believe that they were not
supposed to be helped. The society at the time did not support her actions of settling the young
females claiming that they were Americanized (Addams, 1990). The Native Americans were a
main issue at the time since they used to discriminate these individuals and to view them as
inferior human beings. Her society also lacked tolerance of the individuals being settled, and this
hence became a major challenge in accomplishing her objectives.
Settlements have the capacity to make universal the blessings that we relate to through
ensuring that there is no overaccumulation on one side of the society. They should also have the
ability to change with the demands of the environment, sustain its flexibility, and adapt quickly.
These blessings would be felt all over the universe if people could tolerate each other until
mutual interests develop among themselves. This could also be achieved if people attain the
capacity to recognize their common needs and use their influence to attain them together. The
settlements could also ensure that the blessings associated with them are universal when the
residents commit themselves to good citizenship.
Addams had a perception that social settlements would significantly tackle the needs of
the immigrant women as well as those in the middle class. This is because she encourages them
to focus on the numerous issues that unite them and abandon those that separate them. She
further explains that the male gender is usually brought together by elements that are more longlasting compared to those that separate them. Therefore, the settlement would assist these women
in achieving unity among themselves and deal with issues with more success. The immigrants
would have described their individual desire for settlement as a way to secure their stay in the
United States. They would, however, describe Addams’ desire for settlement is to accomplish
suitable coexistence among people living in the country.
Settlement houses had the ability to deal with the industrial as well as social challenges.
This is because they were able to assist the immigrants as well as other women to participate in
social and industrial duties. Even though this settlement was met with significant resistance, the
houses were able to make the residence coexist with each other. It was then possible to unite and
deal with common challenges together. It was also possible to empower the women and make
them have the capacity to compete for economic opportunities.
Document 21-2 A Sociologist Studies Working-Class Saloons in Chicago
Melendy was able to establish that it was the evangelists as well as the lecturers who are
responsible for patronizing the saloons. This is because they are the ones who associate these
institutions with shame and drunkenness. All the negative aspects of bars were associated with
poor conduct were gathered and named as the saloon. It was the exaggerated perception about
the saloons that made Melendy discover the individuals who patronized them. He also
discovered vividly that these institutions were ethical substitutes of the rest of the institutions
since most individuals preferred to spend their leisure time there. For instance, a poorly paid
laborer tends to prefer spending his leisure time in the saloons in order to forget about his
poverty back at home.

The saloons became the intellectual as well as social centers of the area since it was
where people gathered. Most individuals who were working used to spend their free time in these
facilities with the intention of having a great time. Apart from consuming alcohol, activities like
playing cards, eating, holding casual meetings, and reading was done in these facilities hence
making them suitable intellectual and social centers (Melendy, 1900). The patron of the saloons
was able to understand better how governments operate since discussions about them were done
in the saloons. Politicians were also visiting the place and enlightening the public. The saloons
had significant political influence since it was where most voters gathered with the intention of
having a good time and this also attracted the politicians.
Melendy was comparing the saloons with the Charity Organization Society since it was
providing relief food to everyone who visited the place. This made it feed more people compared
to the society since it did not discriminate the individuals by categorizing them of whether they
deserve the food or not. The charity of the saloons w...
