Do I create do two box and whisker plots, one for the x values and another for the y values.

To make a box and whisker plot, you need 5 things, the median, the upper quartile, the lower quartile, the high extreme, and the low extreme.

To find the median, you need to order your values from lowest to highest, and essentially find the middle value by crossing out the highest and lowest values together one by one. For example, in the set [3, 4, 4, 5, 6 ,7], you first cross out 3 and 7, then 4 and 6, and so on, until you are left with 1 or 2 middle values. If you have one value, that is your median. In this case, you are left with 2, 4 and 5. The median then becomes the mean of the two numbers, which is found by adding the 2 numbers together and dividing by 2 ([4+5]/2 = 4.5, the median of this set).

Now to find your upper and lower quartiles, take your set again, [3, 4, 4, 5, 6 ,7], and cross out the median, in this case 4.5, which isn't in the set, and split the set in half. My set would become [3, 4, 4] and [5, 6, 7]. A set with a crossed out median of 4 would become [3, 4, 4] and [5, 6 ,7] from [3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 6, 7]. Then, using the method from before, find your new medians from both the higher and the lower set. The lower one is your lower quartile, and your higher one is your upper quartile. So, looking at my set, that would be a lower quartile of 4, and a higher quartile of 6.

Next, you need your high and low extreme, which is just your highest and your lowest value in the entire set. In my case, this would be 7 and 3.

To actually use this, refer to my picture, where I show how exactly you should draw and place the information you found to make your Box and Whisker Plot.

Hope this helps!

Thank you but I do know how to make a box and whisker plot. My question is that when you are given a table such a x=5 and y=100.... This is a project and it all had to be done on technology. So we had to go onto the Internet and find a box and whisker plot generator. I was never given a problem like this before, so I thought when it asked for my set of data I would have entered it as an order pair but I didn't let me. Therefore I create two box and whisker plots, one for the x values and one for the y values. I thought I was doing it correctly because the title of the graph was Hours studied vs quiz scores but as I look over my work it just doesn't seem correct.  I'm unsure if the image went through, and sorry if I was my question was unclear.

What do you mean by your work doesn't seem correct? Is something like this what you are looking for: Time Studied in Hours and Score Earned Out of 100?

We are comparing hours studied and quiz scores. As I went to my paragraph summary slide in the presentation I then figured what I was meant to look for. Thank you for your time.

I'm glad you figured out what you were looking for!
