Spirited Away
Introduction
Arguably, the animated movie “Spirited Away” is probably the most important film to
ever come out of Japan. The film came out in July 20, 2001 and is evidently the most prosperousl
Japanese movie to ever come out of Japan, grossing about $289 million dollars globally.
Interestingly, it is the only hand-drawn animated film to ever win Academy Award in the Best
Animated Category. It routinely features in the Best Anime, Animation and Film lists. The
young girl, Chihiro, is Miyazaki’s heroine and opens us up to the Japanese persona of the time,
skirting through several themes in an Alice in Wonderland-esque fashion such as the coming to
birth of our heroine, the influence of Western political thought in post-war Japan, and a sort of a
feminist love story that sees the heroine learn to deeply appreciate herself and her newly found
friends, especially Master Haku.
Disney movies tend to tug at our heartstrings, but Studio Ghibli films essentially pass

that anime fans from every corner of the world declare that Miyazaki's Spirited Away is the
greatest animation film of all time. Over the ages, Spirited Away has sat squarely in the realm of
the iconic, unrivaled for its mixture of the realistic, fantastic, the human and the fantastic.
Miyazaki was the master in balancing those realms and when he retired from active filmmaking,
many will continue to believe Spirited Away as the eternal masterpiece of his life (Steiff &
Tamplin, 2010).
Essentially, the film tells the story of a little known as Chihiro, on a noble journey to
liberate her parents, transformed into pigs for partaking of the food of the spiritual beings.

Bravely, she navigates the spirit world and in this she is trapped in it. And she is found working
in a bathhouse under the overlordship of one called Yu-baaba. Miyazaki’s inspiration was to
predicate it on a little girl who was the daughter of his friend Seiji Okuda. Bearing that in mind,
the movie was practically made for 10 year olds. No wonder it resounds so perfectly with folks
of all ages because Chihiro becomes a real little girl to us. One might be led to wonder on the
frequency of which a film has been designed for young girls, far from the demands of money or
mainstream audiences (Ogihara-Schuck...
