Family Therapy
Family therapy refers to a unit of psychotherapy which aims at helping bring change and
assist in the development of intimate relationship among couples as well as family members. The
family therapist aims at facilitating conversations that push towards strengthening and enhancing
the existing connections between family members. Some of the therapy techniques used in
family therapies include the structural family therapy (SFT) as well as the strategic family
therapy. The structural family therapy was developed by Salvador Minuchin. The SFT views the
family as a system operating under other larger orders like community, organizations, and
culture. Families often face problems that emanate from mental and behavioral issues that result
from one of the family members (Vetere, 2001).
SFT does not, however, give focus to individual pathology instead provides attention to the
whole family structure as it is an indication of a dysfunction in the way the family operates of
interacts. The stand of SFT is that interactions within the family do not cause a pathology instead
it’s the family’s member interactions that encourage or support the symptoms. The therapy
emphasizes the social structure or situation as opposed to focusing on the individual. The goals
of the strategic family therapy are to achieve family goals, solve problems and most importantly
change the problematic behaviors or dysfunctional behaviors of an individual.
