Introduction to Operations Management
Operations management entails to the administration of company’s activities to establish
the highest degree of efficiency possible within the business. It involves the process of
transforming labor and raw materials into goods and services with the goal of maximizing
profits. Typically, operations management personnel try to offset costs with revenue to attain the
highest profit possible. Moreover, operations management entails utilizing resources including
human, physical, and financial resources (Jacobs & Chase, 2013). Operations managers obtain,
create and deliver products to customers based on their needs as well as the capabilities of the
organization.
Roles of Operations Management
Operations management involves several strategies concerns entailing ascertaining the
size of manufacturing premises and project management approaches and adopting the framework
of information technology. Furthermore, operations management also entails aspects such as the
management of the levels of inventory, raw materials purchases, maintenance standards, and
quality control among others. Operations management involves learning the adoption of raw
materials and warranting that minimal waste arises. Organizational management adopts several
approaches like the economic order quantity approach to ascertain the amount of inventory order
is required to be processed (Jacobs & Chase, 2013).
Forces that Shape Operations Management
Today’s operations management is not only viewed as an organizational aspect but also
entails undertakings across organizations. Noticeably, an essential element of the
transformational procedure entails acquiring products and services from other companies. In the

current period of operations management, companies no longer view themselves as an
independent component but rather as a part of a broader, prolonged system. The operations
management paradigm for present and future operations is no longer restricted to a businessspecific region (Stevenson, 2018). In other words, companies are currently prepared to look at
their external environment and establish strategic relationships with other companies that were
previously seen as competitors.
Starbucks, like other companies, engage in the process of operations management.
Despite the company’s success in the field of operations management, various elements impact
the company’s progress. The following are some of the factors that affect the operations
management of Starbucks;
I.

Resources
One of the factors that shape operations management of companies is resources.

Resources, in this case, include human, financial, and physical resources. Operations
management is concerned with resource utilization and the efficiency of these resources provide
a major opportunity to companies including Starbucks. When companies utilize their limited
resources, they maximize financial benefits and minimize costs that arise from losses and
unnecessary wastes. Human resources in Starbucks Inc. are regarded as crucial assets because
they are directly involved in the company’s operations. Due to competition in the labor market,
companies are competing for limited top talents (Stevenson, 2018). Due to these limitations of
top skills, the company’s operations management is negatively impacted as well as its overall
operations.
