Which ordered pair is the vertex of y = - |x + 4| ?

a. (4, 0)
b. (0, 4)
c. (0, –4)
d. (–4, 0)

The equation y = 2x – 1 is the boundary line for the inequality y > 2x – 1. Which sentence describes the graph of the inequality?
a. The region shaded above a dashed boundary line.
b. The region shaded below a dashed boundary line.
c. The region shaded above a solid boundary line.

Part 1. Evaluate the function at x = 0, x = 4, x = -4 and plot (x,y) for each. Then connect the dots You'll see that d) is the vertex (the most pointed part of the graph of y).

Part 2. Plot the x- and y- intercept. Draw a dotted line between and beyond the intercepts. You should see an upward sloping line through the points (0,-1) and (1/2,0). Anything on this line is a solution to y = 2x -1. But y must be larger than 2x-1, so the above y = 2x-1 should be shaded and the line y = 2x-1 should be dotted to indicate that points ON the line y = 2x-1 are NOT included. So, a) is the answer.
