The equal rights amendment (ERA) is a proposed amendment that seeks to ensure the equal
rights of the all citizen irrespective of their sex. Its purpose is to end the legal distinction that
exists between the women and men regarding divorce, property, employment among other
matters.
Since the introduction of the Equal rights amendment, numerous controversies concerning the
meaning of equality for both men and women have erupted. In fact, there arose a rift in the early
stages of the 1920’s when the amendment was introduced. For example, when the middle-class
women largely supported the amendment while the working class women opposed it. Those
opposed the Equal right bill argued that the employed women required special protection
concerning working hours while those who supported the amendment argued that women should
