Introduction
Charlie Kelemeckis is the main character in the film “The Perks Of Being a Wallflower”.
He is shy but a caring young man. He is as well full of guilt. Charlie is portrayed as a very
thoughtful person, something that places him in good as well as bad places. He is a nice person
who cares about his friends. Charlie comes from a family of five members including his father,
mother, brother, and sister, where he is the last-born. Charlie also lived with his Aunt at his early
age and has flashbacks regarding her death in a car accident. Like any other child, Charlie goes
through various challenges as he grows some of which he can overcome and others that he
cannot, however, he remains strong and is successful through his high school education.
Biological and physical issues
Some biological issues can be noticed as Charlie grows up. He is undergoing some
changes that can only be explained biologically. Charlie has sexual feelings and is almost
confused if loves Sam or Elizabeth. Charlie is becoming mature sexually (University of
Minnesota, 2017). He has feelings about his body, sexuality, as well as intimate relationships. He
is trying to identify an intimate relationship with Sam, Patrick, and Elizabeth. Caught in the
confusion, he goes out with Elizabeth to the Sadie Hawkins Dance. During a certain night, while
the group is playing truth or dare, the time comes for Charlie to kiss Mary Elizabeth. This is after
he is dared to kiss the most beautiful girl in the room. Charlie kisses Sam instead of Elizabeth.
This leads to the group ostracizing him. All this indicates that Charlie is having sexual feelings.
He is as well growing physically.

Psychological (emotional and cognitive) issues
Charlie has disturbing flashbacks of her aunt throughout the movie. This occurs
especially when bad things that upset him happen, for instance, when her sister’s boyfriend slaps
her. Charlie’s flashbacks can be considered as closely resembled dissociations rather than real
flashbacks. More flashbacks return to him after the groups start avoiding him for kissing Sam
instead of Elizabeth. His health deteriorates as the flashbacks about her aunt occur. Such
flashbacks disappear after he helps Patrick from the footballers something that makes the group
pardon him and welcome him back. Later, the flashbacks occur once more after having sex
causing him to have a breakdown. Charlie has a blackout after calling his sister rambling about
their aunt’s death being his fault. The episode ends with Charlie being admitted to a hospital
where his doctor, Burton helps Charlie to revisit his memories of how he was abused as a child
by Aunt Helen. According to Charlie, his worst moment was when the doctor informed his
parents of what had happened to him in the hands of Aunt Helen at an early age.
Sexual abuse happens to be a sinister form of trauma due to the shame it implants within
the victim. Babbel (2013) argues that argues that as a victim at a young age, one is very young to
understand what is happening and report to get assistance. This describes the case of Charlie who
was abused at a very young age by her aunt and the issue remains unclear to him until the day he
is admitted to the hospital. Babbel continues to say that failure to proper treatment; it may lead to
a whole life of PTSD, anxiety, and depression (Babbel, 2013). Charlie suffers from PTSD and by
the time he is joining high school, he is afraid that other students will know him as someone
weird and with no friends at all.
