Description

Question 1: Fred is an 83-year-old male who is being admitted to the medical-surgical unit status post fall. He is alert and oriented and reports that while visiting a local casino with his wife Margaret earlier this evening, he tripped over a curb and fell landing on his right side. After receiving morphine in the emergency room prior to transfer to your unit, Fred is rating his pain at 6/10. He has multiple bruises from his jawbone to his knee as well as a slight rotation of his right leg.

Past medical history includes: myocardial infarction (MI) x 2, peripheral vascular disease (PVD) with bilateral iliac stents, non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), sleep apnea, and degenerative joint disease.

Medications include: aspirin, Plavix, Lopressor, Lisinopril, and Metformin.

After reviewing the above scenario please answer the following questions.

  1. Based on the information provided, how will you prioritize your care, what assessments will you include and in what order? Please provide rationale for your response.
  2. Considering this patient's age, injury, past medical history, and list of current medications, what, if any, concerns do you have related to his potential need for surgery?
  3. Should surgery to repair his right femur be required; what type of clearance and pre-op orders would you anticipate receiving related to his diet, meds, lab work, and so on?

Question 2: This week, we will discuss personal communication devices and their use in healthcare. As we focus on this topic, please address the questions below in the discussion.

  • How can the use of the nurse's personal communication device(s) impact patient care positively and/or negatively?
  • What are the ethical and legal implications?
  • What does the professional literature say about how communication devices can support safe nursing practice?

Question 3: Each academic area of study has a particular style for documenting the ideas of other scholars. The standards of formatting document you've been using is from the American Psychological Association (APA). This is the preferred style in the social sciences. As you've noticed, there is a strong emphasis on the publication date. Why do you think there is such an emphasis on the date? As you work on revising your Course Project, what questions do you have about how to incorporate standard APA format and documentation guidelines into your essay? Are there any sources you are having a hard time documenting? Any questions about your reference entries?

Based on the information provided, how will you prioritize your care, what assessments
will you include and in what order? Please provide a rationale for your response.
Considering this patient's age, injury, past medical history, and list of current medications,
what, if any, concerns do you have related to his potential need for surgery? Should
surgery to repair his right femur be required; what type of clearance and pre-op orders
would you anticipate receiving related to his diet, meds, lab work, and so on?
The elderly patient is having various disorders and therefore, he needs an immediate
clinical attention since he demands a medical emergency. The issue of the patient having a
history of MI as well as the PVD with bilateral iliac stents and other ailments needs much
attention. There is a priority order of care that is needed which involves:
The patient first needs a medication as well as critical care where there will be a constant
and close observation of the patient due to the cardiovascular impairments. The patient has to be
monitored closely for his heart rate, blood pressure, and the cardiac output.
He also needs critical care for the cardio-pulmonary impairment as well as any
difficulties in breathing. There will also be a modulation of his blood sugar to ensure that he has
the appropriate sugar levels.
The elderly patient may need a point of care assessment for his circulatory markers due to
the cardiac and metabolic impairments that he has. They will involve oxygen saturation, the btype natriuretic peptide as well as a myocardial creatine kinase.
Lengthwise, even when these assessments are being carried out, there will be a need for
an expert examination for supplementary ailments like freezing, fractures, seizures and many
others that will be monitored as well. There should be a diagnosis that should be made by an
expert only before a surgery of the femur can be conducted. When a need for surgery comes up,
the patient will be required to fast for around eight hours as well as being put on glucose drips
together with the appropriate antibiotics and pain killers In this situation, such a patient may be
at a high risk of urinary tract infections, stroke, the need of a blood transfusion, pneumonia and
other infections If he undergoes a knee joint or femur surgery Due to his history of having
diabetes, he could be at a greater risk of acquiring infections, having a slower wound as well as
an incision repair. There should be a vital stat analysis together with a hemogram that should be
performed and laboratory tests for whichever microbiological infection or even a hematologic
disorder that should be tested before the surgery takes place.
How can the use of the nurse's communication device(s) impact patient care positively and
negatively? What are the ethical and legal implications? What does the professional
literature say about how communication devices can support safe nursing practice?
According to the study that I have made, I have discovered that the way nurses use
communication devices may impact the patients care in negative ways. However, nurses have an
ethical responsibility of providing safe patient care through the avoidance of non-essential
distractions. There are conside...
