Recall that a right triangle contains a 90-degree angle. Also recall that the measures of the three angles in any triangle add to 180. The measure of angle x is 42 degrees larger than 2 times the measure of angle y. Find the measures of angles a and y.

x = 2y +42

x+y +90 = 180

x+y = 90

2y+42+y = 90

3y+42 = 90

3y = 90 - 42 = 48

y =16 degrees

so x = 32+42 = 74
