 If a ball is tossed in the air and allowed to fall to the ground, will the total energy remain constant? Why or why not?

total energy of ball remains constant just before it hits the ground.

The energy possessed by the ball is mechanical energy which is sum of kinetic and potential energy. As the ball moves upwards K.E decreases and P.E increases and the total energy remains constant. For downward motion K.E increases and P.E decreases with total energy constant.
