The difference between two numbers is 25. The smaller number is 1/6th of the larger number. What is the value of the smaller number?

Let the numbers be x and y, x being the larger one

x- y = 25 ; the difference between two numbers is 25

y = 1/6 x ; the smaller number is 1/6 the larger one

So you can solve the value of x by substituting the value of y in the first equation:

x - 1/6x =25

5/6 x = 25

x = 25 x 6/5

x = 30.

Now solve the value of y by substituting the value of x in any of those equations:

y = 1/6 x

y = 1/6 x 30

y = 5

So the value of the smaller number is 5.
