you walk 4 miles on an indoor track. then you jog at twice your walking speed for another 4 miles. if the total time spent walking and jogging is 3 hours, find the walking and jogging rates

let your walking rate be x m/hr,

So the jogging rate will be 2x m/hr since it is twice the walking rate.

Time taken when walking is given by distance traveled divided by walking rate:

4/x hrs

Consequently

Time taken when jogging is given by distance covered divided by jogging rate or speed:

4/2x hrs

The total time taken 3 hrs

so 4/x + 4/2x = 3

(8+4)/2x = 3

12/2x = 3

12 = 6x

so x is 2 m/hr, which is walking rate.

Jogging rate was twice the walking rate, so it is 4 m/hr.

Hope this helps! Please best me if it does or ask questions if you are not satisfied!
