Supply Chain Risk in the Cybersecurity Industry
Introduction
Supply chain risks have been reported to be a major challenge in the cybersecurity industry.
Although manufacturing supply chains are important in the development and fulfillment of the
modern technology, they have a rapid change in the global locations also change (Kube, 2015). It
is the dynamic nature of the supply chains that expose various enterprises to a wide variety of
supply chain risks (Kube, 2015). According to Peter Sommer (2011), governments need to make
preparations that are detailed to recover from the unwanted cyber issues that are both unwanted
and deliberate. Boyens, Paulsen, Moorthy, and Bartol (2015) also stated that federal agencies are
always concerned with the supply chain risks that are associated with the ICT products to protect
the development of the technology that the agencies want.
Boyens, Paulsen, Moorthy, and Bartol (2015 continued to explain that the supply chain
risks are associated with the decreased visibility into the supply chain, and the understanding of
the development of technology organizations acquired. Moreover, Kennedy and LaMondia (2015)
also stated that company’s portfolio is always at risk exposing the companies to supply chain risks.
Indeed, supply chain risks are the major challenges in the cybersecurity industry. Although there
has been an increase in the supply chain risks in the global cyber security industry, the exact risks
have not been understood. This paper, therefore, presents a detailed discussion on the possible
supply chain risks, due diligence for procurement and acquisition, and the best practices that can
be used to manage the global supply chain risks.
Supply Chain Risks

industry. These risks include lack of visibility into the sourcing and tracking the sensitive cyber

components, limited control in the protection of sensitive data and essential transactions between
the supplier and the manufacturers, malicious functionality, inadequate integrated processes,
counterfeit electronics and quality of the software codes.
Lack of visibility into the sourcing and tracking the sensitive cyber components has been
found to be the major supply chain risk in the cybersecurity industry. Kube (2015) reported that
visibility is the only way that can be used to track the activities that happen in the sourcing of
sensitive cyber components in the entire lifecycle of a supply chain. Similarly, Francis (2008) also
reported that visibility is widely used in the management and logistics of a supply chain in an
organization. The implication of these studies is that lack of visibility into the activities of a supply
chain exposes an organization to risks and mess up of their supply. Therefore, it can be concluded
that lack of visibility into the sourcing and tracking of sensitive cyber components is a major supply
chain risk in the cybersecurity industry.
Another potential supply chain risk has been identified to be the limited control in the
protection of sensitive data and essential transactions between the supplier and the manufacturers
(Kube, 2015). Ngai, Moon, Riggins, and Yi (2008) stated that protection of confidential data from
