The words of the father, Egeus, and the minister are male-centric. His words “stolen” “turned her obedience which is due to me,” her beauties composed by a man,and minister’s words “your eyes must with his judgment look” all create the environment which is that Hermia is to follow the words of the men, that she should be under the control of them because she was made by her father. The characters words set the stage for feminism as another theme to prevail. Her fate lies in whether she may choose the life she hopes for or face death. She must take solitude over the man she loves. Hermia’s strength is shown when she consoles Lysander that she will choose him. The colorful stage and clothing also contrasts with the dark threat of death that looms over Hermia. The images of the characters contrast with their words because Shakespeare’s notorious style juxtaposed against the 1960’s attire makes for the theme of time confusion which is prevalent throughout the play, even the title gives way for this theme.
