Total – 100 points
Part I: Middle East (total 20 points)
From the YouTube video “Israeli Settlements Explained”
1. What are the settlements on the West Bank?
Israeli settlements on the West Bank are basically residential areas, which Israel has built. The
Jewish community occupy the settlements. However, they are within Palestine territories.
Why does the international community view them as illegal?
According to the video, the International Community consider the settlements on West Bank
illegal because Israel has been transferring its citizens to occupy these settlement areas, which
violates the IV Geneva Convention regulations. IV Geneva Convention is a body that outlines
the civilian protection round the globe and it prohibits any state from transferring citizens from
occupying the land.
Why is it considered an impediment to a peace agreement?
It’s considered an impediment for peace agreement because despite that the settlement are
illegal, the two sides (Israelites and Palestinians) have solid stubborn negotiation grounds. While
the Israeli want an assurance that they will continue possessing the land prior to any negotiation,
the Palestine’s hold that they can’t enter into negotiations over the land that Jewish are utilizing
already illegally.
How many people live in the settlements?

A high population of around 540, 000 people live in the settlements. The number is increasing
day in day out.
Why do so many people live in the settlements?
The mystery behind the high population in the area is an interplay of numerous factors. First,
Jewish feel they have their religious right to occupy the land in the West Bank. Second, there is a
good infrastructure like road networks that link West Bank to Israel. This necessitates movement
between the two areas, which are geographically far apart. Thirdly, the area has favorable
business including low tax rates, low loan interests, and government subsidies. Lastly, the area
has tight security from military.
How does Israel entice them to settle there?
The government entice citizens to live in West Bank by building good infrastructure to link the
area to Israel. It has also built roads within the area to ease movement and trade. Tit has also
offered incentives including low taxes, subsidies, and lower credit rates. The government also
guarantees security to the Jewish community in West Bank by sending many military to guard
the area.
How much land is used for the settlemen...
