Disagreement between Harry Frankfurt and Daniel Cohen
Harry Frankfurt and Daniel Cohen disagree on the issue of alternate possibilities and
Moral Responsibility. Harry Frankfurt article on ‘'Alternate Possibilities and Moral
Responsibility'' brought forth a big literature debate on whether an individual is morally
responsible for behavior that he or she could not have avoided. From his article keeping up
with Joneses (and Black), which was presented by John Martin Fischer, Frankfurt seems to
challenge the principle of Alternate Possibilities (Fischer, 2010). He argues that a person or
an agent should only be held accountable morally for carrying out a given action if she or he
was in a position of doing otherwise.
To demonstrate his view he gives an illustration of an old surgeon whom he referred
to as Black who decided to insert a computer chip into the brain of Jones. Black's favorite
candidate for the white house was Obama and he wanted to influence Jones to vote for him.
Frankfurt argument is that the Democrats had their chance of winning the white house
regardless of the alternatives given. According to Fischer (2010), the Democrats had all the
opportunities of winning the white house. In his illustration compares the caring elderly
neurosurgeon to the Black.It is said that this old surgeon has come out of retirement in order
to participate in this philosophical example.
The alternate possibility is to win the white house and in order to do this and without
taking into consideration the moral responsibility; the old surgeon has inserted a chip into the
Jones' brain. This chip makes it possible for the Black to observe and control Jone’s
activities. This chip is controlled by a sophisticated computer that Black has programmed.
