  A 3.0-kg and a 5.0-kg box rest side-by-side on a smooth, level floor. A horizontal force of 64 N is applied to the 5.0-kg box pushing it against the 3.0-kg box, and, as a result, both boxes slide along the floor. How large is the contact force between the two boxes?

64N/3 kg +5 kg = 64/8 = 8 m/s ^2 so 8 m/s^2 is the acceleration rate.

Find the horizontal net force of box 2 by using
E Fx =F2x=f= m2ax

Determine the contact force by substituting m2 and ax with the weight and acceleration of box 2
(5kg) (8m/s^2) =40 N.

I got this question from my practice midterm and according to it the answer should be  0.25

i dont think so this is the correct answer............this is the same force act on both boxes which is 40 n
