American political system is a democratic system of government. America is considered
the land of opportunities and a land of immigrants. The culture of Americans is based on civil
liberties, equality before the law, individualism, and rule of law, nationalism, and capitalism.
America is the only country in the world that social mobility is guaranteed. There is always the
conflict between politics and economics. The political culture of a nation is based on shared
beliefs, values and norms and America are not any different. The American dream guarantees
freedom.
The American government is divided into two the State and the federal governments. The
national government also referred as State is divided into three namely; the executive this is head
of State elected by Electoral College in a democratic election. The President is the head of State
and head of government. He appoints the judges of the Supreme Court and acts as the
commander in chief. He also appoints ambassadors. The president signs all legislation that
affects the State into law. The second arm of government is the legislature that passes laws of
national interest. The last arm of government is the Supreme Court. Security of the State is
guaranteed by the State.
The federal government works hand in hand with the national government. The federal
government has their own legislature that and court system that serves the individual states.
Some laws passed by the Congress have to be ratified at the local level. The Federal government
deals with public services, public works, local security and social services. Each federal state has
representatives in the Senate and the Congress for representation.
There are two major political parties in America namely the Democrats and the
Republicans. During presidential elections usually, the two are the major parties, there are
pockets of liberals and the independents who can also contest political office. The way the

government and the public relates is interesting depending on the individual's philosophy. There
are people who prefer a stronger government that allocates and distributes social and public
goods, whereas others prefer less government and more opportunities to the free market to offer
the same services.
Liberty and civil rights are a big deal in the United States of America. Civil liberties are
protected by the constitution and no government can withdraw them. Individual's rights are
superior to State rights; this is different compared to many other countries. The right of worship
and association are protected rights enjoyed by all Americans. Equality among gender is
guaranteed. No form of discrimination is allowed. The right to vote, own property is shared by
all men and women. Individualism is recognized as a right of an individual. The individual rights
to self-determination, to choose leaders, to vote and to record displeasure are guaranteed in the
constitution. The rule of law is universal in America. The rule of law is independent of race,
family background or economic status ("UsHistory.org").
