Span of control
The term span of control has been used widely in business and public administration.
While the term does not make up a principle in itself, is a generalization of the common
sense dictates within an organization. The term is used to refer to the total number of
subordinates that a supervisor has under his responsibility in an organization (Eeckhout &
Kitcher, 2012). The following figure is an illustration of the application of the concept;

The image above demonstrates the span of control of the manager. The manager has
seven employees under his responsibility, and that makes up his span of control. There are a
lot of factors that are used by an organization in designing the span of control. These factors
would be useful in determining whether the span of control will be narrow or wide.
