Dance is a performing art that involves sequential body movement. In most cases, these
movements are artistic and symbolic. The value of a dance is recognized by the performers and
the viewers within a given culture. Dance is categorized on the basis of choreography, historical
settings or the origin and the skills of movement. Dance has originated from the past where it
was used in the primitive cultures to pass information and stories. Primitive dance in china was
used to link with sorcery other traditional rituals of the country.
Dance is categorized into secular, ritual, interpretative and synopsis or abstract.
Approaches of dance include concert and social dance. Concert dance basically takes the form of
dramatic structure of a narrative. The movement and the styles used are chosen carefully in order
to reflect the personalities and the goals of the characters as well as their function in the piece.
The movements and gestures here are a little bit free and longer than those in non-narrative styles
of dance.
The second approach is the participatory. These are the dances whose intention is to
participate rather than observe. They function to represent various mimes as well as narration but

essence of creating a sequence in the dance. The mini sequences the function to create variation
and regularity. Lead and follow element applies mostly in a dance of two people. Lead refers to
the actions done by the man on the stage and follow refers to the lady’s reaction towards the
man’s lead movements. This element is mostly portrayed in salsa dance where two people dance
close to each other.
Timing is a vital element also. This refers to the beats to which we move our feet to. We
have fast songs like hip-hop and slow songs like Rhumba. The speed of feet movement differs in
the two dances of the music. Style as an element is used to create the dance character. This
occurs through arm, hip or body position as well as type of movement on the across the dance can be a sexy dance like salsa or break dance in hip-hop. The final element is continuity
that means correlation of the dance. Consistency encumbrances all the other elements of dance
and is achieved through also helps in building confidence.

other in that they reinforce each other. For example, disco. Even in the modern artist compose
their original music accompanied by the dance. Some music are used to illustrate certain dances
and at times named after them. Functions of dance Rhythm and dance are interlinked by very
