The company's new chief executive officer (CEO) is looking to grow the company into a sustainable organization. Traditional management focuses on the goals and objectives of the senior management
only. In most cases, the goal is to increase sales or profits in order to please shareholders.
Employees are responsible for producing quality products and sales and production are the main
tools for measuring production. Wal-Mart is one of the companies that use traditional
management in pricing and merchandising. Although the company enjoys a huge reputation for
everyday low prices, its business model has been challenged. Its stores do not perform well in
cities and online retailers such as Amazon are challenging their low prices. These problems show
that Wal-Mart needs change. The company adopts Kotter’s change management model to create
change.
According to Bhatt (2017), change management refers to a planned intention to change a
corporation’s direction from its existing position to an anticipated situation in the future. Change
management is necessary because it emphasizes creativity, innovation, and transformation.
