Hellooo. here is the work
1. Digestion is an important process in the human body. a) Identify and describe the
digestive processes. b) Consider the mouth, stomach, small intestines and large
intestines - identify the digestive enzymes that are present in these organs of the
digestive system and identify the substances they digest. c) Include where absorption
of nutrients occur.
The digestive system comprises of a series of process. It starts with ingestion where food is
introduced into the mouth. The mouth is where the food is introduced into the digestive system.
Digestion involves breakdown of large components into what can be acted on by the digestive
enzymes. It is both a mechanical process and chemical process. Mechanical process occurs
primarily at the mouth where food is chewed and broken down into digestible food particles. The
wavelike contractions in the smooth muscles of the stomach also do this though mechanical
process.
The chemical digestion, the digestive enzymes, hydrolyze the macromolecules of our meals in
absorption subunits. The chemical digestion takes place in the mouth, travels through the
stomach and ends up in the small intestine. The food must have passed from one organ to
another, with the help of smooth muscle contractions called peristalsis. Any remaining residuals
must be expelled. Absorption occurs when the molecules of the subunits produced by chemical
digestion cross the GI tract wall and penetrate into the cells that line the tract. Now the nutrients
can enter the blood to send the cells. Finally, the elimination removes the molecules that cannot
be digested and this results in discharge from the anus. This process is called defecation. The
digestive enzyme that acts in the mouth is the salivary amylase present in saliva. This enzyme
begins the chemical digestion of starch, as well as bicarbonate and the antimicrobial compound
called lysozyme. The digestive enzyme that acts in the stomach is pepsin. Pepsin has the function
of dividing proteins into smaller peptides.
The gastric cells that produce pepsinogen are the main cells. There are a couple of digestive
enzymes that are found in the small intestine. Most of these e...
