What does the 13th Amendment grant to all Americans? What is one of the
exceptions?

The 13th Amendment abolished slavery and involuntary servitude unless when one was being
punished for a crime they committed. The 13th amendment was passed by the Congress on 31st
January 1865 and then ratified by the states on 6th December of the same year. One of the main
expectations from this amendment is for all people to be treated equally without discrimination
on the grounds of color.

The movie Birth of a Nation confirmed what narrative?

The birth of a nation confirmed the narrative that slave holders killed people for nothing more
than being black. Slavery is rampant in the film and people are punished because of their color
and not because they committed a mistake or such things.

Jim Crow relegated African Americans to SecondClass citizens.

How did the Civil Rights Movement change the notion of criminality?

Criminality was treated differently when it came to blacks as compared to the white population.
However, the civil rights movement gave African Americans a lot of freedom and rights to
protect them. In turn, people were treated equally and people who committed the same crime will
receive the same punishment.
