The Genetics of Eye Color
Our DNA acts as an instruction manual which determines who we are, our physical
traits, as well as our behavior. These genes, which are inherited from our close family
members, determine factors such as the color of our eye, our hair color and texture, and our
height. Most of our traits can be determined by a single genes or a bunch of genes which may
work together to result to a certain trait. One of the commonly studied genetic trait is our eye
color, which comes from our parents genes. Some genes versions could be dominant,
meaning stronger, or could be recessive, meaning that they are weaker.
An individuals’ eye color is determined by their pigmentation of a structure known as
the iris. The Iris surrounds the black hole in the center of one’s eye known as the pulp.
Depending on the structure, the Iris’ color can vary from light blue to dark brown. This color
determines whether one’s eyes will be brown, blue, or green/hazel. Most people tend to have
brown eyes, indicating that they have large amounts of melanin in the iris while the other two
colors indicate that an individual has less of the pigment (America, 2016). This experiment
