When purchasing modern technology at XYZ hospital, cost and time barriers are the
major roadblocks. Given that the hospital is a non-profit organization, start-up costs and
maintenance is high. In addition, it is always difficult to directly access the cost benefits and
savings of the new technology in proving care to the patients (Burns et al. 2011). Therefore,
justification of capital expenditure for the modern technology acquired by the organization may
be difficult to ascertain. The time required to acquire, educate, implementing, using, and testing
the efficiency and effectiveness of the new technology might be long.
Healthcare providers and especially those who deal directly with the patients might have
little time or no time to learn about the new technology. In addition, resistance to change is also
another barrier. Various studies have established that majority of employees perceive that the
technology increases the workload. Studies have also established that healthcare providers
perceive technology as complicated, complex, and hard to learn (Burns et al. 2011).
Consequently, the employees believe that the technology put personal pressure on their busy
schedule. Hence, it takes a long time to convince the employees that the new technology does not
affect the general activities.
Lack of professional human resource workforce is also another barrier. To introduce new
technology, there must be the skilled workforce for its effective operation. Lack of training to
