Think back to a recent meeting you attended that was not effective. A good meeting planner can overcome this inertia by performing four steps:

  1. Assign specific tasks to specific people.
  2. Review all actions and responsibilities at the end of the meeting.
  3. Provide a meeting summary with assigned deliverables included.
  4. Follow up on action items in a reasonable time (Barrett, 2014, p. 303-304).

Explain each of these steps and describe how each step could be implemented to improve the meeting's effectiveness. Be sure to clearly articulate the strategy to resolve the conflict.

Here are some questions to consider when writing your paper: (not required)

  1. Who called the meeting?
  2. What was it about?
  3. Was there an agenda?
  4. Was the purpose of the meeting accomplished?
  5. After the meeting, were minutes distributed that outlined tasks and deadlines?
  6. During the meeting, what role did you play all or most of the time (leader, scribe, facilitator, etc.)?
  7. What could have been done to make the meeting more effective?

Your paper should be 3-4 pages in length, and conform to CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA Requirements, and include appropriate references. I’ve been working since I was 11 years old. I’ve been to more meetings than I could ever
count. I have been to meetings that were handled extremely well, and I have been to meetings
that were not productive in any way. An excellent leader will also be a good meeting planner
and will know what is necessary to hold a successful meeting. There are several steps that can
be taken that can improve the chances of a successful meeting:
➢ Assigning specific tasks to specific people
➢ Review all actions and responsibilities at the end of the meeting
➢ Provide a meeting summary with assigned deliverables included
➢ Follow up on action items in a reasonable time
Successful meetings require the planner to put some thought into what the meeting is intended
for and what they need to get out of the meeting. Taking into consideration who needs to attend
the meeting and why, will also help to ensure success.
An Unsuccessful Meeting
I used to work for a human resource manager that was excellent at putting together crafts
for an awesome function, but not so wonderful at the meeting planning that needed to take place
to make them happen. What usually happened went something like this: our organization would
hold a summer get-together; the human resource manager would be tasked with the role of
making the party a success. The manager would hold meetings in which there was no direction,
just a ton of ideas floating around, said manager would get off track talking about all the fun
things we could do, said meeting would go on forever, there would be no action items, said
manager would agree to make things because that is what she was good at, the final event would
be a confusing, scatter-brained mess.



She was our HR manager for quite a few years; so many meetings were similar to this
one. There were never any agendas, the purpose of the meetings were generally not
accomplished, there were never any minutes taken during or distributed after the meeting, and
they generally lasted longer than they were supposed to. I was almost always involved in every
meeting for one reason or another, depending on what the meeting was about. Many things
could have been done to make our meetings more successful.
