Description

In short essays of 750-1500 words, respond to two of the following three questions. You will not be deducted points for writing more than this, but are unlikely to benefit from doing so either.

1. Describe the impact of the contemporary human rights regime in the world today. Is the role it currently plays satisfactory? If not, what role (if any) should it ideally play in the future?

2. How did the idea of human rights change or evolve in the 20th Century? Do you believe that the way it was developed has favored some countries or groups at the expense of others? Why or why not? If you believe it has done so, do you think this is problematic?

3. Explain the benefits and weaknesses of using (a) trials, (b) truth commissions, and (c) reparations to recover from atrocity by finding a way “between vengeance and forgiveness”. 1. Describe the impact of the contemporary human rights regime in the world today. Is
the role it currently plays satisfactorily? If not, what role (if any) should it ideally play
in the future?
The concept of human rights has been a major issue when it comes to the international
arena. Many individuals had initially been victims of the violation of their rights but not much
could be done to assist them beyond the national level. On the adoption of the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the 56 members off the United Nations on 10/12/1948,
a solution was brought forth by presenting clear rights for each individual and repercussions
against their violation. The declaration catered for offenses against human rights that go beyond
the national level of each country such as slavery which was a major issue then. With time,
human rights evolved to accommodate issues that came up in the world.
The impact that the human rights regime has had in the world at large cannot be ignored.
Taking into consideration the United Nations Charter on human rights, the impact it has had to
the general social interactions in the world and the fundamental human rights and the worth plus
dignity of all individuals is quite commendable (Ramcharan, 2015). The Charter has influenced
the conduct of individuals, organizations, countries, and continents in their interactions in
accordance3 with its rules and regulations. From the general outlook, it can be ascertained that
the regime is duly performing its duty to safeguard the human race (Knight, 2015). To begin
with, the UN Charter, that has been a key contributor to the promotion of human rights, has led
to the establishment of peace and security in the world through its member states (Ramcharan,
2015). This has only been made possible by the emphasis on human rights which has led to the
respect of individual security that sums up to the overall promotion of security in the world
which goes ahead to promote world peace in the long run (Donnelly & Whelan, 2017).

Maintenance of peace has been successful due to the inclusion of human rights components in
the whole peace-keeping process and activities thus when the needs are catered for at an
individual level, the social interactions are peaceful and have a very little conflict (Donnelly, &
Whelan, 2017). The secure world environment has, in turn, led to the development of the
economic sector, education sector, medical sector and the political arena among other fields
(Knight, 2015).
The observance of human rights has also brought about gender and racial equality.
Racism has been a critical issue in world interactions but human rights have created a sense of
equality among all races (Donnelly, & Whelan, 2017). Interactions have become way better only
due to the existence of this regime where each race is given its worth and verified of its
importance. Gender equality has also been greatly promoted throughout the regime as well.
Initially, there was male concentration but continuous emphasis on human rights have led to
women empowerment and has put the two genders at par in the constantly competitive world
(Donnelly, & Whelan, 2017). Human rights have had a major role to play in promoting equality
through the efforts of major organizations such as the UN which has been at the forefront of
campaigning against any kind of biases (Ramcharan, 2015).
General treatment of individuals has also been catered for by the human rights system.

countries and institutions. Through...
